Waste Stabilization/solidification (s/s) Using Fly Ash-based Geopolymers. Influence of Carbonation on the S/s of an Eaf Dust

چکیده
The effect of the curing in a carbonated ambient of the solids obtained after the stabilization/solidification (S/S) of metallurgical waste using geopolymerization technology is described in this paper. The electric arc furnace (EAF) dust used to stabilize contains hazardous metals such as Pb, Cd, Cr or Zn. Different geopolymeric agents as potassium hydroxide, potassium silicate, metakaolin and blast furnace slag have been used. Mixtures of EAF waste with these kinds of geopolymeric materials and class F fly ash have been processed. Samples were submitted to an accelerated carbonation test. Compressive strength tests and different leaching tests for determining the efficiency of heavy metal immobilisation have been carried out. Comparison of fly ash-based geopolymer systems with classical Portland cement (OPC) stabilization methods has also been accomplished. Compressive strength values far better than those achieved by hydraulic S/S methods were easily obtained by geopolymer solids at 28 days. Carbonation produced a great increment of compressive strength in samples containing a higher K2O proportion. Regarding leachability, the geopolymer S/S solids also manifested better behaviour in general, showing very promising results. Carbonation effects on pH and on Zn and Pb leachabilities are more marked for OPC than for geopolymer S/S solids.

Arsenic contaminated site at an abandoned copper smelter plant: waste characterization and solidification/stabilization treatment.
A preliminary survey of an arsenic contaminated site from an abandoned copper smelting facility and feasibility study of using solidification/stabilization (S/S) process to treat the contaminant waste were undertaken. It was found that the waste, located in the three-flue gas discharge tunnels, contained 2-40% arsenic. The pH of the contaminated waste is extremely low (ranging from 1.8 to 3.6)....

Current research emphasis is more on the utilization of materials that are considered as waste. Tailings and fly ash are major category of industrial wastes, whose disposal is problematic from environmental point of view. In this present research, Industrial byproducts, namely, lime (CaO) and class F type fly ash have been used as candidate materials along with the partial addition of ordinary ...

Two new pre-treatment methods (water-washing/carbonation and carbonation/phosphate stabilization) of municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator residues were evaluated by column leaching tests under aerobic conditions and anaerobic conditions (which were changed to aerobic conditions after 10 months). A mixture of bottom ash and fly ash (5:1 ratio) was pre-treated using each method. Shredded incom...
متن کاملCarbonation of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash and the Impact on Metal Mobility
Fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration ~MSWI! is considered as hazardous waste that calls for a robust, reliable, and reasonable treatment technique. This investigation aims to assess the impact of CO2 partial pressure, water addition, time, and temperature on the stabilization of MSWI fly ash with particular emphasis on Pb, Zn, Cd, and Cr. Carbonation and element mobility were studied...
متن کاملEffect of Fly Ash Fineness on Sorption Properties of Geopolymers Based On Liquid Glass
Abstract—Fly ash (FA) thanks to the significant presence of SiO2 and Al2O3 as the main components is a potential raw material for geopolymers production. Mechanical activation is a method for improving FA reactivity and also the porosity of final mixture; those parameters can be analysed through sorption properties. They have direct impact on the durability of fly ash based geopolymer mortars. ...
